Hrithik Roshan is sure taking his 'Emperor Akbar' role pretty seriously.

Long after the movie has gone, Duggu baba and his real life Empress, Sussanne, are still living life shahenshah-size. No wonder they continue to live in a plush suburban hotel for the umpteenth week now. Remember, 'termites' were cited as a reason for their home-repairs at 'Palazzio'? (Snigger, snigger, excuse the giggles).

We hear that they are still nestled into a private wing of the hotel, even as the 'repairs' have reached the Roshan ceiling now and big time tod-phod is on to fix the damaged ceiling. Anyway, now after living in the five-star hotel for so many weeks, it's almost as if the entire premise is like their private lavish mahal. The couple is now a common sight all over the poolside, the gym, the restaurants and the lobby – so much so that the staff doesn't even blink when they see the good-looking duo casually strolling around. Of course, he possibly has his own has guests dropping in, for his own 'out-of-home' parties too. It's sure causing plenty of other hotel visit numbers to swell, only to catch a dekho of the star. Quite a personal mahal, eh? All thanks to some 'white ants'. Hmnnn! Must've been some serious termites. But our tip... while the fumigation is on, why not check for some 'bed bugs' too, haan? And no jokes, we mean khatmals. Hee hee!

Aamir Khan, Rekha to receive Raj Kapoor Award

The Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award would be given to Rekha, and Khan will be given the Raj Kapoor Memorial Award for Special Contribution. "We have spoken to all of them and they have accepted the awards while promising to be present at the presentation ceremony," Patil said.

Speaking on the choice of Pune as the venue for the ceremony, Patil said it was known as a culturally vibrant city with historical importance. "We have also arranged a multitude of cultural programmes which are being managed by actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar," he added. A number of Marathi film artistes, including Siddharth Jadhav, Vijay Kadam, Amruta Khanvilkar, Sachin Khedekar, Sharvari Jamenis, Sonali Kulkarni and Ashwini Ekbote, will participate in the award function.

All-Indian Marathi Film Federation president Ajay Sarpotdar, who was also present at the news conference, said a variety of programmes, including a film festival, would be held in the run-up to May 30. "The film festival, wherein we will screen 21 of the most popular films from the last two years, will be inaugurated on May 23," he said.

The ministry has also decided to felicitate all recipients of the Padma awards this year who belong to the film industry, including singers Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu and Shamshad Begum and music director Pt Hridaynath Mangeshkar. "We are awaiting their confirmation. We have also decided to felicitate the stars of the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire' and so have also invited music director A R Rahman for the same," Ajay Ambekar, director of the state department of culture, said.

In the 20th century we celebrate February 14th with the exhange of candy and cards. Children give out cute little heart-shaped greetings that proclaim their affection for classmates and teachers. But in 5th century Rome, where the whole business allegedly began, it was a different story. On February 15th the festival of Lupercalia was celebrated to ensure protection from wolves. The celebration paid homage the gods Faunus and Lupercus, as well as the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. According to myth, Romulus and Remus were suckled by wolves at a cave on the Palatine Hill, in the city of Rome. The Romans appropriately named this cave the Lupercal, and used it as the center of Lupercalia ceremonies. Young men called Luperci(priests) were reported to have struck people with strips of animal hide. Women accepted the blows because they felt that this whipping would increase their fertility.

In the Roman society a young man's rite of passage was celebrated with this pagan celebration to the god Lupercus. As time went on Lupercalia began to be celebrated with a lottery in which the young men would draw the names of the teenage gals from a box. The lucky, or not so lucky, girl would then be the fellow's sexual partner during the remaining year. Often the lady would receive a gift or a greeting in the name of Juno, a Roman goddess.

With Strom, RIM enters the now crowded touchscreen smartphone market. In the past few months, all mobile manufacturers seem to have got into an uphill battle for touchscreen supremacy, with all of them launching one or more touchscreen model.

In India, the Canadian company launched its BlackBerry Bold in October, which packs a host of multimedia capabilities including a 2 megapixel camera with video recording and an advanced media player.

Here's looking into the stormy offering from BlackBerry.

Measuring 4.43 X 2.45 X 0.55 inches, the new BlackBerry weighs 1.55 kgs. The phone's look is quite similar in size to larger BlackBerry models but trades a standard QWERTY keyboard for a high-resolution 3.25-inch touchscreen. The phone's display supports 480x360 pixel resolution and 65,000 colours.

BlackBerry Storm packs a ClickThrough feature, which means its touchscreen is not just touchable but clickable. To select a specific area of a web page, users can press down, so the entire screen clicks down. This means that the Storm has two levels of input (touch and click) which has been used to advance the interface. In simple words, when a user selects or enters a text, he can push the screen down.

Priced at Rs 27,990, the smartphone will be available across select Vodafone stores from January 15, 2009.

Its closest competitor Apple iPhone retails at Rs 31,000 for 8GB and Rs 36,000 for 16GB in India.

The phone packs a host of multimedia capabilities including Bluetooth 2.0 with support for stereo Bluetooth headsets, dial-up networking and GPS. The phone comes with Media Player with support for music and video formats including MP3, AAC, WMA, WMV, MPEG4 and H.264.

Storm is equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera with video recording, auto focus and flash. The phone also comes preloaded with instant messengers like Yahoo, Windows Live, AOL, and ICQ and social networking apps like Facebook, MySpace and Flickr. The phone has BlackBerry Maps for text-based turn-by-turn directions.

The company claims Storm supports battery life of up to 15 days (standby time) and up to 5.5 hours (talk time).

The phone comes with 128MB of flash memory and 1GB of onboard memory. The phone offers support for microSD/SDHC expansion slot up to 16GB cards.

BlackBerry Bold too packs 128MB flash memory, 1GB on-board storage memory and has support for microSD/SDHC memory card slot for memory expansion of up to 16GB.

BlackBerry Storm will run on the latest BlackBerry operating system (version 4.7). The phone will support multiple email accounts: BlackBerry Enterprise, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, POP3, IMAP4 and more.

BlackBerry Storm, however, lacks WiFi. The phone's carrier in US, Verizon says that WiFi would have added to the smartphone's size and cost. Also, a few third-party BlackBerry apps are not yet available for the touchscreen.

Unlike the 3G iPhone that doesn't have copy and paste feature, BlackBerry Storm supports this functionality. Also, the smartphone offers support for MMS (Multimedia messaging), video recording and voice dialing features that are missing in the Apple iPhone.

A R Rahman first Indian to win Golden Globe

Music maestro A R Rahman, who became the first Indian to win the prestigious Golden Globe Award, dedicated it to the "billion people of India," as British Director Danny Boyle's Mumbai-based saga 'Slumdog Millionaire,' bagged four prizes at the ceremony on Monday.

A Mumbai underdog's rags-to-riches story, 'Slumdog Millionaire', swept all the four categories it was nominated for, winning the best director award for Boyle, the best music score for Rahman, best screenplay for Simon Beaufoy and also in the category of best drama.

Rahman, who won the coveted prize for his music score 'Jai Ho' in the film, thanked the director and his fellow musicians in Mumbai and Chennai, besides the "billion people from India".

"Unbelievable..! I thought, I would not win, so anyways thanks to the almighty God for bringing me here... Danny Boyle, Fox pictures, all my musicians in Chennai, Mumbai,... and the billion people from India," he said while accepting the award.

Director Danny Boyle bagged the best director award, while Simon Beaufoy won the best screenplay award for the film that starred Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and British Indian Dev Patel.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was at the ceremony to represent India, introduced the film to the foreign audience with 'Slumdog' actress Frieda Pinto.

It is also the first Golden Globe for 52-year-old Boyle, who is expected to be among the favourites at next month's Oscars following the phenomenal success of the film at award circuits.

Dedicates win to India

Music maestro A R Rahman has dedicated his achievement to the country.

Vijay Singh, CEO of Star Fox Studios, which is all set to release the film in India on January 23 said he spoke to Rahman soon after winning the Best Original Music score award for 'Jai Ho', penned by lyricist Gulzar.

"He (Rahman) told me that this is a gift for India," Singh said.

Last week on his birthday (January 6) before leaving for Los Angeles, Rahman told reporters via video conferencing from Chennai that he wanted to win the award for India.

"Personally for me, it would be surprising if I win. But, I want to win it for India," Rahman had said.

"It is a proud moment for all Indians. The film has won four awards--Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Original Music score. The story touches the hearts of Indian film watchers. It is about hope, overcoming all odds and believing in your love," Singh said.

Bollywood singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan said, "Rahman is truly the king, the leader. He is one of the finest composers of this country. He has carried India's name on the global map and has achieved something which no one from this country could do. He deserves every award that exists."

Music director Pritam said he was overjoyed to hear the news about Rahman's success. "Rahman is the best. He has made India proud," he added.

Actor Jackie Shroff, expressing happiness after the film won the awards, said, "Rahman's win is special. India deserves to be on the top. Such an honour is never too late."

Santa Claus and the Christmas Tree History and Significance

The name Santa Claus is a US version of Sinter Klass, which it the dutch for Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas was a Christian saint from the early church in what is now Turkey (Then a greek speaking part of the Roman Empire). He was a bishop and was renowned for giving anonymous gifts to poor people. His feast day is December 6th when, in some countries, people still give presents to children from St Nicholas.

However, this present giving was moved to Christmas by some protestant reformers so Saint Nick went with it.

The tradition of the Christmas Tree started in Europe and is first recorded in the 16th century, well into the Christian era. There is no evidence at all of any connection to paganism.

The first Christmas trees were put up on Christmas Eve and were decorated with fruit and nuts (now replaced by glass baubles and candy). Christmas Eve used to be counted as the Feast of Adam and Eve. The connection is obvious - the Christmas tree represents the tree in the Garden of Eden.

The birth of Christ, the second Adam, transforms the tree from a symbol of our fall to a symbol of our redemption.

In Christmas Festival, India, the towns and villages get ready to do brisk business and offer discounts and sales on articles. Markets are packed with huge crowds. People buy gifts for their loved ones with great thought and affection, decorations and number of items to cook. The ambience of the houses is made festive by decorating their homes to the hilt with Christmas trees, wreathes with bright red decorative baubles, festoons, bells and small trinkets. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu, people hang stunning star-shaped paper lamps of different colors and sizes outside their homes. Such star lamps in Kerala are more beautiful with some patterns or cutwork designs on them. About a week before Christmas, the church, club and school choirs are greeted by people with cakes and other eatables. Christmas carols are sung in different local languages all over the country.

In Christmas Festival, India churches hold a special Midnight Mass, which is attended by most people of the community. This is looked at as not only a sacred prayer but also an important social event as well. Members of both sexes wear new clothes and remain present for the Mass, looking their absolute best. The Mass continues for a few hours and remembers the Savior who gave up his life so that they may live. The ceremonies held in Calcutta, Kottayam, Delhi, Sardhana, Martandam, Aizawl, Kohima, Shillong, Panaji and Pondicherry deserve special mention.

Ghajini is about Prashanth Pawar (Amir Khan), a rich businessman who owns a cellular phone company named Air Voice and the events surrounding his relationship with Kalpana (Asin Thottumkal).

Kalpana, an advertisement model goes around telling her advertisement crew that she is the love interest of Prashanth. Kalpana does this in spite of having never met him and also goes to the extent of giving an interview about her relationship to a popular magazine.

Prashanth happens to hear about this through the media and wants to settle scores with her. On his way, he catches a fleeting glimpse of a young woman (who happens to be Kalpana) helping handicapped children to cross a street. It is love at first sight for Prashanth. He moves on to confront Kalpana at her advertisement studio. He is pleasantly surprised to realise that she is the same helpful woman he saw a while ago. He chooses to hide the fact from her that he is Prasad, calling himself as Manohar. Kalpana eventually falls in love with him.

Once, while on a train to Mumbai, Kalpana saves a group of young girls from abuse by a group of goons led by Lakshman (Pradeep Rawat). After a few days, the same goons come to Kalpana's house in order to avenge their embarrassment. Incidentally, Prashanth arrives at the scene and fights off the goons, but during the ensuing fight, Kalpana is murdered. The irony showcased is that Kalpana never finds out that he is Prashanth.

Lakshman then strikes Prashanth on his head severely with a metal rod. Though he survives the blow, but suffers from a short-term amnesia. At any given time, he does not remember anything that happened more than 15 minutes back, although he frequently has flashbacks of Kalpana's murder.

He determines to take revenge on those responsible for Kalpana's death. The rest is how Prasad, along with a medical college student Chitra (Jiah Khan), goes about finding Lakshman and the goons.

Microsoft offers Office Open Document Format (ODF) notes

Microsoft, the world's largest software firm, on Wednesday released documents detailing its implementation of Open Document Format (ODF) version 1.1 to its Office 2007 Service Pack 2, which is scheduled to release in 2009.

With this release, Microsoft expects developers to address interoperability issues between the ODF format and Open XML (OOXML). The notes would be available on the Document Interoperability Initiative site.

A Microsoft official told DNA Money, "By publishing notes on how we are implementing file-format standards in Microsoft Office, we are providing details that others can use as reference points for their own applications."

The release would give a fillip to Microsoft's case for pushing multiple standards for e-governance projects in India as more and more developers start working and enhancing the format and reducing the interoperability issues among the two popular standards.

The government's draft policy favours a single standard for e-governance projects in the country, which could benefit single-standard supporters like IBM, Red Hat and Sun Microsystems.

An IT department official said, "For each domain, among the standards meeting the above criteria, the government will choose a single standard for a specific purpose within a domain for seamless interoperability and data preservation."

However, some officials in the IT department are raising concerns over a single standard as the eligibility criterion. The official declaration on the standards would be made in February. Meanwhile, the detailed notes on Microsoft's implementation of OOXML in Office 2007 will be available in the coming weeks, the Microsoft official said.

"I really didn't expect this," says a surprised but delighted Katrina Kaif on being the most searched name on the Internet, which means that she is more popular among the net-savvy youngsters.

"I'm very surprised. I really didn't expect this. Google is the only thing I know on the Internet. I'm not too Internet-savvy. Who doesn't want to be recognised and loved? IIM Kolkata tops in raising corpus fund

IIM Kolkata has built a corpus fund of Rs 110.18 crore, the highest of all IIMs in the country, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday.

The interest earned on the corpus fund is used by the IIMs in running the educational programmes of the institutes so as to help brilliant young management aspirants of all communities in both urban and rural areas realise their dreams.

In 1994, the government, under the revised pattern of funding, had allowed the IIMs at Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Kolkata to raise funds and build a corpus of their own.

As of March 31, 2008 IIM Kolkata had built a corpus fund of Rs 110.18 crore, Minister of State of Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said in a written reply.

Other institutes like IIM Ahmedabad had a corpus of Rs 50.09 crore till March 31 this year while IIM Bangalore's was Rs 36.14 crore.

The institutes have a separate scheme for extending financial assistance to students under 'need based policy.'

However, the minister also clarified that the institutes do not have special scheme to admit students belonging to minority category.

Motorola has launched its clamshell music phone MotoYuva W396 in India.

The phone packs the latest version of MP3 player software that includes playlist creation which allows users to organise songs by genre, artist or album.

The phone lets users record excerpts of songs from FM radio along with radio data system (RDS) functionality, which shows the name of the artist, song and genre of music playing.

World's first energy savings mkt in India

India will have the world's first market for trading in energy savings. Under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, the power ministry has prepared the blueprint for trading in energy by industrial plants that save energy beyond the targets set for them.

Under the plan, formulated by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency and earlier announced in principle by the PM's climate change council, the government will set mandatory targets to be achieved by each large industrial unit and plant in energy intensive sectors, which include cement, aluminium, steel, power, textiles, fertilizers, railway, paper and pulp industries. The plan, which is to be brought soon before the PM's climate council for the final approval, will set in place the first such open market in the world for energy savings.

Under the global compact on climate change under UN aegis, there exists an international trade in greenhouse gas emission reductions.

But India, which has extremely low emissions as compared to the industrialized countries, has taken the stand that the only steps it needs to take, that too domestically, is to further strengthen its energy security which will automatically bring co-benefits of reduction in the global warming causing emissions.

Named the 'Perform, Achieve and Trade' or PAT scheme, energy reduction targets would be set in terms of the 'specific energy consumption' for each plant individually to ensure that there are no blanket benchmarks that create an uneven turf for different sizes and type of players.

While the methodology for ascertaining the energy consumption in each identified sector has been finalized, it will take a year to ascertain the target for each large unit.

Once the targets are set by end of 2009, the industry will be given three years to achieve them. Those units that surpass their targets will be provided 'energy certificates'. These certificates will be tradable on the existing power exchanges in the country. Companies that fail to meet the targets set for them will have to buy these certificates under an open market mechanism.

If the failed units do not meet their target either by achieving energy savings or by buying the energy certificates, they would be penalized by the government under the Energy Conservation Act.

Under the plan, BEE will accredit private agencies to audit the actual energy consumed by the industrial units and retain the powers to carry out random checks.

Microsoft readies location search engine

Software giant Microsoft Corp has finalised the product design of its Robust Location Search in what seems to be an effort to challenge popular online mapping and location search systems in the market.

The project has moved out of Microsoft's labs in Bangalore and into its development centre in Hyderabad. It is all set to be a part of Windows Live, which is the collective brand name given by the IT major to its services and software products.

Srini Koppolu, corporate vice-president and managing director of Microsoft India Development Centre (MSIDC), said the research team has transferred the technology of the project to the development centre and its integration with Windows Live has begun.

"The integration process has started but we can't set a timeframe for its completion," Koppolu said. Microsoft Research India (MSR India) in Bangalore and MSIDC in Hyderabad have collaborated for the Robust Location Search project, which is aimed at making search on maps easy.

Dr P Anandan, managing director, MSR India, said, "This project takes a radically new approach to location search by using keywords to find places rather than commonly used address rules to answer queries."

He said the approach helps get relevant results regardless of the address type and structure, and also enables cross-lingual address searches. The new location search will also look for addresses on maps using the nearest landmarks. 'Instead of specific house numbers, we normally use nearest landmarks to locate an address. The new project would do this accurately and point out such addresses on the map. Even if the user provides a wrong spelling, the location search engine will look for relevant information," Koppolu said.

Microsoft's India teams are also working on various programmes that will become a part of Windows 7, the new operating system being developed for home and business desktops, laptops and tablet and media centre PCs.

One such product under development at MSIDC is Mobile Broadband, which will help Windows 7 users connect to the Internet from any location with cellular connectivity.

MTNL launches Third Generation (3G) services in Delhi

Ushering in a new era in the Indian telecom sector, state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) on Thursday launched the third generation (3G) mobile service 'Jaadu' here.

Communications and IT Minister A Raja, who was present on the occasion, made a video call, demonstrating the capabilities of 3G services.

At the launch event, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, "I congratulate MTNL and the communications minister for launching the 3G service."

"Competition has to be the major propeller of the Indian economy and it has to be a sustainable one," he said while demonstrating the mobile TV facility available with 3G services.

"However, effective objective and impartial regulations have to be an integral part of all these processes for investors to invest further," he added.

Added Raja, "BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd) and MTNL have already been allotted 3G and broadband wireless access spectrum with a view to ensuring early rollout of 3G and Wi-Max services in the country."

While MTNL has rolled out its 3G services only in Delhi, BSNL will launch its services in Chennai next month.

Talking about the revenues generated through licensing fees and sale of spectrum, Raja said, "After migrating to revenue sharing regime, this sector has contributed Rs 500 billion (Rs 50,000 crore) through licence fee, entry fee and spectrum charges till the end of last financial year."

"During this financial year alone, it is expected that about Rs 160 billion (Rs 16,000 crore) will be collected from the licence fee and the spectrum charges," he added.

The minister also said mobile number portability (MNP) would be implemented in metros and category A circle by the middle of 2009 and the entire country by end of next year.

MNP will enable mobile users to retain their telephone numbers when changing from one network to another. "This will promote competition among service providers," he added.

Business Process Outsourcing - BPOs may lose 2.5 lakh jobs

Business Process Outsourcing firms are likely to see 2.5 lakh job losses by the first quarter of 2009 in the wake of downturn in the US and other developed economies, BPO industry association said.

Though the industry is likely to see thousands of job losses, the silver lining is that the recession would compel more companies in the US and Europe to look at outsourcing as a way to cut costs and improve efficiencies, the Business Process Industry Association of India (BPIAI) President Samir Chopra said.

Praveen Sengar, Head-Software, Services & Industry (Vertical Reserach), IDC India Ltd saidthe slowdown is likely to impact expansion plans of the industry, as the time taken for signing up new clients is taking longer time.

"It will also result in greater consolidation and promote diversification into areas hitherto considered as non-core activities," Sengar said.

Chopra said that urgent government measures are required to boost the industry, specially for the medium and small enterprises.

Both fiscal and administrative measures like extending tax relief for another 5-10 years and export promotion steps, including market development fund is need of the hour, Chopra said.

He further said the terrorist attacks in Mumbai has led to the widespread cancellations of visits and forthcoming international events.

Box office failure of small budget films like "Sorry Bhai!", "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye", "Maharathi" and "Dil Kabaddi" has broken the myth that small is successful.

One after the other the small budget movies are crashing at the box-office, marking doom for their producers. Failures of films have left scars on others associated with these movies, including the actors and writers.

The worst happened during the last two weeks when all the above-mentioned "small-budget" movies -- also including "Meerabai Not Out" -- were released to take advantage of the gap that appeared before the release of the biggies - Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" and "Ghajini" that has Aamir Khan in the main lead - in the coming weeks and fell flat at the box-office without exception.

After the failure of the movies, the producers, who have made these movies on the periphery of Bollywood, find themselves in a piquant situation. They are startled by the outright rejection of their productions by the audience. Failures have set them thinking as to where they have gone wrong.

"Well, they have gone wrong on many fronts," said Komal Nahata, a trade analyst. "First, they erred on the presumption that the box-office success of the last year's release, 'Bheja Fry', was a harbinger of good times for non-star-cast productions.

"When this small budget movie hit the big time at the box-office, it got many producers thinking that the time had come for them to replicate its success. So, they hurriedly put together their productions without bothering to analyse what, actually, had made 'Bheja Fry' click in the first place.

Exercise, sleep cuts cancer risk

Regular physical activity can significantly lower a woman's risk of developing cancer, but skimping on sleep can eliminate those gains, new study has found.

In a long-term study of nearly 6,000 US women, researchers found that those who exercised the most had a 25% lower chance of developing cancer than those who were the least active.

But among younger, physically active women, those who slept less than seven hours a night had a 47% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer than those who regularly got a good night's rest.

Greater participation in physical activity has consistently been associated with reduced risk of cancer incidence at several sites, including breast and colon cancers," said James McClain, a cancer prevention fellow at the National Cancer Institute and lead author of the study, released yesterday.

Short duration sleep appears to have opposing effects of physical activity on several key hormonal and metabolic parameters, which is why we looked at how it affected the exercise/cancer risk relationship."

It is not yet known exactly why exercise reduces cancer risks but researchers believe it could be due to the lower body weight, improved immune function and hormone levels associated with regular physical activity.

Insufficient sleep has been linked to high risks of developing a number of conditions including heart disease, obesity and diabetes but, again, researchers have not determined exactly how sleep prevents disease.

The study was presented at a conference in Washington sponsored by the American Association for Cancer Research.

Barack Obama talks economics in TV interview

President-elect Barack Obama, in his first television interview since his historic election, said Americans shouldn't worry about the

growing federal deficit for the next couple of years and also urged help for the auto industry.

While investors are still riding a rollercoaster on Wall Street, Obama told CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview /poadcast Sunday that the economy would have deteriorated even more without the $700bn bank bailout. Re-regulation is a legislative priority, he said, not to crush "the entrepreneurial spirit and risk-taking of American capitalism'' but to "restore a sense of balance."

He also said, "We shouldn't worry about the deficit next year or even the year after. ... The most important thing is that we avoid a deepening recession."

Obama said he has spent the days since the election planning to stabilize the economy, restore consumer confidence, create jobs and get sound health care and energy policies through Congress.

"There's no doubt that we have not been able yet to reset the confidence in the financial markets and in the consumer markets and among businesses that allow the economy to move forward in a strong way," Obama said. "And my job as president is going to be to make sure that we restore that confidence."

While he said "we have the tools," the president-elect said not enough has been done to address bank foreclosures and distressed homeowners.

"We've gotta set up a negotiation between banks and borrowers so that people can stay in their homes," Obama said. "That is going to have an impact on the economy as a whole. And, you know, one thing I'm determined is that if we don't have a clear, focused program for homeowners by the time I take office, we will after I take office."

Obama credited Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson for trying to remedy "an unprecedented crisis" the country hasn't seen since the Great Depression.

"Hank Paulson has worked tirelessly under some very difficult circumstances," Obama said. "And I think Hank would be the first one to acknowledge that probably not everything that's been done has worked the way he had hoped it would work."

A member of the transition team works with Paulson daily, Obama said, getting the needed background and sometimes offering approaches to address the economic meltdown.

In the CBS interview, Obama also said that as soon as he takes office he will work with his security team and the military to draw down U.S. troops in Iraq, shore up Afghanistan and "stamp out al-Qaida once and for all."

"I think it's important to get a national security team in place because transition periods are potentially times of vulnerability to a terrorist attack," he said. "We want to make sure that there is as seamless a transition on national security as possible."

Obama acknowledged meeting with former Democratic primary rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton last week, but refused to say whether she was being considered for secretary of state, as has been widely reported. He also said the Republican party will be represented in his Cabinet.

Throughout the interview, the Obamas engaged in amiable banter, often finishing each other's sentences. For example, when Barack Obama said he found it soothing to wash dishes, Michelle Obama interrupted, "Since when was it ever soothing for you to wash the dishes?"

"You know, when I had to do it," the president-elect said. "I'd make it into a soothing thing."

The Obamas promised their two daughters a new puppy would make the trip to Washington with them, but they said the pup won't become part of the first family until after they move into the White House on Jan. 20.

"We're on call-mode on the dog front," Michelle Obama said. "Because the deal with the dog was that we would get the dog after we got settled. Because as responsible owners we, I don't think it would be good to get a dog in the midst of transition."

The president-elect said he has been enjoying the comforts of his own home since the election.

"I'm sleeping in my own bed over the last 10 days, which is quite a treat,'' he said. "Michelle always wakes up earlier than I do. So listen to her roaming around and having the girls come in and, you know, jump in your bed. It's ... it's a great feeling."

Obama comes to the Oval Office with an ambitious list of campaign promises that will require Capitol Hill's cooperation and approval, and the team he has been announcing in recent days is heavy on the legislative experience that Obama is lacking.

Obama resigned his Illinois Senate seat Sunday after just under four years of service, half of which he spent out on the presidential campaign trail.

During the campaign, Obama had Pete Rouse as his Senate chief of staff to take care of his business on Capitol Hill. On Sunday, Obama named Rouse to be a senior adviser in his White House. Rouse has 24 years of experience as a top Senate aide, also running the offices of former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Obama's Illinois colleague, Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin.

Obama also confirmed reports that he intends to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, and "make sure we don't torture" as "part and parcel of an effort to regain America's moral stature in the world."

Obama also said he plans to put al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in the crosshairs. "I think capturing or killing bin Laden is a critical aspect of stamping out al-Qaida," Obama said. "He is not just a symbol, he's also the operational leader of an organization that is planning attacks against US targets."

Asia stocks down for 2nd day on dismal outlook

The yen surrendered gains as the drop in Asian markets was less than that seen on Wall Street overnight, with Japan's Nikkei average dipping 0.3% after losing more than 2% in early trade.

But investors confessed they had few reasons to be optimistic. "Whether it's economic indicators or company news, all of it's just too awful," said Takashi Ushio, head of the investment strategy division at Marusan Securities.

The MSCI benchmark index of Asian stocks outside of Japan fell 0.5% in early trade. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 shed 2.2% on news of faltering demand at aluminium maker Alcoa and a dismal outlook from Tyco International Trading activity remained sluggish as many investors stuck to the sidelines, choosing to sit out the final months of what's been a brutal year as they try to assess how deep a recession the global economy may be facing.

Shares in Shanghai and Hong Kong briefly rose on hopes for more official measures to help the economy after a batch of data showed Chinese consumer inflation slowing to a 17-month low and import growth falling even as latest numbers on Wednesday showed consumer spending holding up.

China at the weekend launched a nearly $600bn economic stimulus package aimed at infrastructure spending, a move that gave a fleeting boost to equities and investor confidence earlier in the week.

Analysts said a slowdown in Chinese import growth suggested domestic investment was slowing more quickly than demand for its goods, raising worries about a deeper economic slowdown despite the record trade surplus posted last month. The troubles in the United States cast a shadow on the rest of the world.

Shares of General Motors slid to a 65-year low of just $2.92 on mounting worries about whether it can avoid bankruptcy. US automaker woes have prompted Congress to consider emergency aid that could be passed as soon as next week.

Traders said the prospect of near-term assistance to US automakers helped left S&P 500 futures 11 points, or 1.3%, in Asia trade. The yen gave up initial gains as stocks trimmed losses, but traders said any further slide in major indexes would help the yen push back towards last month's 13-year peak hit against the dollar.

The dollar was up slightly at 97.72 yen compared with 97.66 yen in late US trade, while the euro climbed to 122.72 yen from near 122.30. The dollar index, a gauge of its performance against six major currencies, dipped 0.1% to 86.970.

The yen tends to trade closely with stocks due to its role in the carry trade -- borrowing the low-yielding Japanese currency to buy higher-yielding currencies or other assets.

But the stock market losses in Asia and on Wall Street the previous day gave a lift to safe-haven Treasuries, which traded again after US bond markets took a break for the Veterans Day holiday on Tuesday. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note gained 8/32 in price to yield 3.728%, down about 3 basis points from Monday's close. A deteriorating global economic outlook has also cast doubt about demand for commodities, driving oil and metal prices down.

US crude oil dipped 8 cents a barrel to $59.25 after falling as far as $58.32 the previous day, the lowest since March 2007 and down more than $80 from record peaks hit in July.

National Stock Exchange's benchmark Nifty rose 2.69 per cent or 79.95 points to 3052.95. Bombay Stock Exchange's 30-share Sensex rose 2.28 per cent or 227 points to 10,191.95 from Friday's close.

Giving a technical perspective, Religare Securities said, "From an immediate scenario, pivot for the week is pegged at 2985 points. There is likely to be a tussle around 3130 and 3200 points. Support is at 2848 and 2730 points.

Last week's range of 2860-3250 points needs to be broken decisively for a directional move. In panic dips, keep stop loss at 2585 and 2220 points for longs. Volatility is giving disciplined traders excellent opportunities;trade with appropriate stop loss."

The stimulus package, worth 4-trillion yuan ($586 billion), of which 100 billion yuan is earmarked for this quarter, will be spent on low-rent housing, roads, railways and airports and infrastructure in rural areas. The funds, equivalent to almost a fifth of China's gross domestic product last year, will be used by the end of 2010, the State Council said.

Asian stocks rallied on news of the stimulus plan with the Nikkei surging 5.49 per cent. Topix gained 4.15 per cent, Hang Seng rose 3.01 per cent and CSI 300 jumped 4.85 per cent.

Wall Street rebounded on bargain-hunting on Friday following a two-day sell-off, as investors snapped up shares in the wake of a drop in October payrolls data that was large but not as dire as had been feared.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shot up 187.25 points, or 2.15 per cent, to 8,883.04. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 19.67 points, or 2.17 per cent, to 924.55.

The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 38.45 points, or 2.39 percent, to 1,647.15.

Touring different parts of the country, the writer, who has started her trip from Puducherry, has written around 18 books. Her books mostly deal with the theme of relationships between people and the society around.

"I started writing at a young age. Born during the Second World War period, when there was no television, books were my life. My first book on the story of a bat was published when I was around 30 years old," Ms. Fleutiaux said.

Her book – "Des Phrases Courties Ma Cherie" (Short Sentences My Darling) – dealing with problems of ageing parents and mother-daughter relationship won the Best Foreign Book award in China.

Talking about Indian books, she said, "Indian writings are fascinating. I have read books such as "Babyji" by Abha Dawesar, "Far from Chandigarh" by Tarun Tejpal and I find there is such a wealth of characters and landscapes."

After drawing inspiration from the nomination of Segolene Royal for the position of the head of state, she penned her recent book – "La saison de mon contentement" (The season of my content). "It was the first time in France that a woman was chosen to represent her party in the elections. This created a lot of stir in France and I decided to pay attention to what people said and the prejudices that came up," the 67-year-old writer said.

From theme-based writing earlier, she observes there has been a big turning point now. "I find novels are becoming much more interesting now, full of stories and characters. The stress is less on the theme and is much more on the story. When I started to write, the field was dominated by the theory of new novel. It was a difficult period then," she added.

Regarding women writers in France, she said that there were several awards in the country and the jury mostly consisted of men. "The most prestigious award which is around 100 years old has been given only nine times to women. It has become a tradition," she said.

Coming up with a solution, she noted, "Women should take their own rights and assert their rights, not against men. The universal is masculine till now and has to become feminine too. Women just need to express to show other women that it is possible to exist fully as a woman," Ms. Fleutiaux added.

She has been invited along with another French writer Alain Wagneur by the French Embassy to visit places in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi and would also interact with students.

Talcum powder 'can raise cancer risk'

A new study has revealed that women who use talcum powder around their private parts everyday are actually 40 per cent more likely to develop ovarian cancer -- the risk is only restricted to the lower body.

Talc is made from a mineral called hydrous magnesium silicate which is crushed, dried and milled to produce powder used in cosmetic products.

And, according to researchers, powder applied to the private parts in the lower body may travel to the ovaries and trigger a process of inflammation that allows cancer cells to flourish.

Lead researcher Dr Maggie Gates said that until the outcome of further researches, women should avoid using talc in the genital area, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

Dr Gates and colleagues at Harvard Medical School have based their findings on an analysis of over 3,000 women -- the study found using talcum powder once a week raised the risk of ovarian cancer by 36 per cent.

The risk increased to 41 per cent for those applying the powder every day, the researchers found.

The study also revealed that the risks were greater still for those with a certain genetic profile. Women carrying a gene called glutathione S-transferase M1, but lacking a gene called glutathione S-transferase T1, were three times likely to develop tumours.

The study has been published in the latest issue of the 'Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention' journal.

Oldest rocks on Earth found in northern Canada

A pinkish tract of bedrock on the eastern shore of Canada's Hudson Bay contains the oldest known rocks on Earth, formed 4.28 billion years ago, not long after the planet was formed, scientists said on Thursday.

The rockst may be remnants of Earth's primordial crust, which formed on the planet's surface as it cooled following the birth of the solar system, according to Jonathan O'Neil of McGill University in Montreal.

"Maybe it was the original crust, and before that there was no stable crust on the Earth. That's a big question," O'Neil said in a telephone interview.

The expanse in northern Quebec, measuring about 4 square miles (10 square km), is made up of the volcanic rock basalt. To determine the age of the rocks, geochemists used isotopic dating methods analyzing the elements samarium and neodymium.

The scientists, who describe the discovery in the journal Science, said studying these rocks can give clues about what the planet was like early in its history. The solar system, including the Earth, was formed about 4.57 billion years ago. These rocks date from roughly 290 million years later.

Richard Carlson of the Carnegie Institution of Washington said certain characteristics of the rocks suggest that water was already present on the Earth's surface. Scientists debate when oceans first appeared and whether water formed on the planet or was brought here when icy comets struck it.

The nature of the rocks also give clues as to temperatures when they formed, Carlson said.

"Probably when the planet formed it was a cauldron, but even this early in Earth history it had cooled down to something not dramatically different from today -- probably hotter but not dramatically hotter," Carlson said.

The scientists did not find direct evidence of life in the rocks. The earliest life is thought to have been bacteria.

"We know that probably the right environment was there for life to be on the Earth -- so liquid water and all it takes to have life. Now was there life? This is a big question mark," O'Neil said.

The previously known oldest rocks, in Canada's Northwest Territories, are 4.03 billion years old.

While some tiny mineral grains from western Australia date from 4.36 billion years ago, no complete rocks have been found older than these newly identified ones, the scientists said.

The rocks, found in an area called the Nuvvuagittuq greenstone belt, are a pinkish, brownish color.

"It's a very pretty rock. It's layered pink. And then it's got big garnets in it that make big, round blobs in the layering," Carlson said.

Rising Yamuna water level threatens Taj Mahal

The rising water levels of the River Yamuna are posing a threat to the Taj Mahal compound, though there is no cause for immediate alarm.

Officials said they had posted policemen near the Taj Mahal to monitor the water levels.

The floodwaters have reached the outer wall of the Taj compound, built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

The rise in water levels has been caused by the release of water from two barrages following heavy rains upstream.

"I haven't seen before the floods of this intensity. Entire village is inundated and people are forced to leave their places. I have lost my cattle and other property including food grains," Ram Kumar, a flood-victim said in Barabanki.

Meanwhile, in Orissa, tens of thousands were still stranded on embankments and highways after large areas were flooded following the opening of the sluice gates of a dam on the Mahanadi River.

Reports of food riots breaking out in many areas after villagers complained they were not getting relief supplies have come in from flood-hit Jagatsinghpur district.

BJP senior leader LK Advani accused the Central Government of not providing enough assistance to the state in time of crisis.

"In all such situations what is expected of the Central Government is to be responsive to the calamities and give necessary assistance. Major calamity of this kind can be tackled satisfactorily only if the state is assisted by the Centre in a manner commensurate with the nature of the tragedy," Advani said who surveyed the flood-hit regions of the state.

Authorities said more than 100,000 people were still marooned and 19 more deaths were reported overnight, raising the death toll from floods in the state to 48 in the past week.

It was created by the US Congress in July 1958 to challenge the former Soviet Union's rise in the space race, a year after the Soviets launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, into space. The agency known as NASA officially began operations on October 1, 1958.

Around 19,000 employees work at NASA headquarters in Washington and in its 10 command centers around the United States, along with an additional 40,000 contractors to the space agency. The most well-known bases are the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida where space shuttles are prepared and launched, and the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas where shuttle mission control and International Space Station operators are located.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California is where NASA designs its robotic missions to comets, Mars and other planets in the solar system. In addition to the Apollo missions to the moon and the construction of the International Space Station through shuttle missions, NASA has launched a series of scientific missions including the repair of the Hubble telescope, which revolutionized astronomy.

A final repair mission is scheduled for October. Other strong moments for NASA include the missions to Mars of twin robots Spirit and Opportunity since 2004, and in June the launch of the probe Phoenix which confirmed the presence of water on the red planet.

NASA has lately been concentrating more of its efforts on the Constellation program, whose Orion capsule is slated to bring Americans to the moon by 2020 and further in the future, to Mars. NASA has been led by scientist Michael Griffin since April 2005.

Google, T-Mobile unveil the G1 phone

The first cell phone running Google Inc.'s mobile software looks something like Apple Inc.'s iPhone and has a large touch screen, but it also packs a trackball, a slide-out keyboard and easy access to Google's e-mail and mapping programs.

Google made its debut as a cell phone software provider on Tuesday at an event where wireless carrier T-Mobile said it will begin selling the G1 phone for $179 with a two-year contract. The device hits US stores Oct. 22 and heads to Britain in November and other European countries early next year.

The phone will be sold in T-Mobile stores only in the U.S. cities where the company has rolled out its faster, third-generation wireless data network. By launch, that will be 21 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Houston and Miami.

In other areas, people will be able to buy the phone from T-Mobile's Web site. The phone does work on T-Mobile's slower data network, but it's optimized for the faster networks. It can also connect at Wi-Fi hotspots.

The data plan for the phone will cost $25 per month on top of the calling service, at the low end of the range for data plans at U.S. wireless carriers. And at $179, the G1 is $20 less than the least expensive iPhone in the US.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Google's founders, made a surprise appearance at the launch event. "It's just very exciting for me as a computer geek to be able to have a phone that I can play with and modify and innovate upon just like I have with computers in the past," Brin said.

He said he'd written an application for Android already: When a user throws the phone into the air, the program records how long it takes until it lands, using the phone's built-in motion sensor. Brin acknowledged that the wisdom of including such a program with an expensive phone is dubious.

"We did not include that one by default," he said.

Page said the mobile phone industry, which sells 1 billion units a year worldwide, was a tremendous opportunity for Google.

Google is giving away Android, the software that underlies the G1, for free, and opening the operating system to third-party developers who can create their own programs. Google hopes that in turn, mobile phones will provide even more ways for people to interact with the company's advertising network.

The squad will be present at every match of the second season of the league that begins at Hyderabad Oct 10, an ICL statement Tuesday said.

"Cheerleading is not just tamasha (mindless drama). It is a sport by itself. Until now, it was the exclusive domain of the international cheerleading troupes. But, thanks to ICL, this country will now have an indigenous cheerleaders' squad," Sawant said in the statement.

The ICL Zeebra squad comprises eight other cheerleaders - Ritika, Preeti, Jessica, Geeta, Richa, Sharvari, Jayshree and Sangeeta. They will perform across all the match venues of Gurgaon, Panchkula, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

Sawant has personally auditioned and hand-picked the squad members and their performances will be designed by a Mumbai-based choreographer.

"It was after my performance at Panchkula during ICL's Season 1 that I saw a huge opportunity for a possible Indian cheerleading squad," the actress said.

"That dialogue resumed a few months later and culminated in the formation of the ICL Zeebras. I can't wait to don my Zeebra outfit and break into a jig every time Rohan (Gavaskar) or Raviraj (Patil) hits a six. I am sure, this will be one cheerleading squad that the country will remember for a long time," she added.

Indian film 'Shoot On Sight' banned in Pakistan

Jagmohan Mundra's next film Shoot On Sight , set for release in Indian theatres on October 17, has been banned in Pakistan as it portrays an actor from that country as a terrorist.

But Mundra says he is not surprised. "Yes my film Shoot On Sight has been banned in Pakistan because Pakistani actor Mikaal Zulfikar who plays Zaheer, a terrorist, is shown to be from that country".

Pakistan has objected not only to the actor but also to the character of the terrorist being from Pakistan.

"In a dialogue between Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri, it is revealed that the character Zaheer is from Pakistan. The Pakistanis didn't like it," said Mundra.

Shoot On Sight is based on the July 2007 London bombings. The film is a riveting drama that unfolds the turmoil in the life of Tariq Ali (Naseer), a Muslim police officer at Scotland Yard, who is asked to track down suspected suicide bombers involved in the strikes.

What puzzles Mundra is that even after facing several problems, the film Khuda Kay Liye released in Pakistan.

Khuda Kay Liye had Pakistani actors in Pakistan playing fundamentalists. The only thing is, they didn't show any terrorism related violence. They only showed fundamentalism. But, Shoot On Sight shows the violent underbelly of fundamentalism. The Pakistanis didn't like that," said Mundra.

2 terrorists killed in ongoing shootout in Delhi

An encounter is currently on between Delhi police and suspected terrorists in the Jamia Nagar area in south Delhi.

Fierce exchange of fire is on between the terrorists and Delhi Police. One terrorist has been killed and one policeman is reportedly injured in the encounter.

The National Security Guards (NSG) is on standby at the at the encounter spot.

According to police sources, three terrorists are holed up in Batla House (Jamia Nagar).

The Special cell of Delhi Police reacted to a tip-off received from Ahmedabad blasts prime suspect Mufti Abu Bashir on the presence of terrorists in the area.

More forces have been rushed to the area, which has been completely cordoned off.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has reached police headquarters.

Jamia Nagar is close to New Friends Colony in south Delhi.

On Thursday, Bashir was brought to Delhi in connection with Saturday's (Sept 13) serial blasts. He allegedly told his interrogators that he knew serial blasts were being planned in Delhi but claimed he was not aware of their timing. The blasts killed 25 people and left over 100 injured.

According to police sources, Bashir on Thursday also told his interrogators that more back-to-back attacks on Delhi had been planned.

This energetic bittersweet comedy (more accurately perhaps - drama with a sense of humour) turns a contemporary eye on something that is taken too much for granted in Indian cities, especially Mumbai – private space. It's about the clash between a stockbroker who is not allowed to sleep at night and a small-time trader who won't let him (as the secretary of the building society they live in). This seemingly trivial, even laughable, problem eventually snowballs into disasters for both of them and their families, while unspooling the attitudes of people around them.

Gisele, 27, who rakes in 35 million dollars a year as per the new Forbes list of the top 15 richest supermodels, has "more contracts than any other model on the planet," according to Forbes.com reports.

The supermodel's steadiness has earned her a huge reputation in the tough world of modelling and she is the subject of a sexy new spread in Arena magazine, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Leander Paes wins US Open mixed doubles crown

Indian tennis ace Leander Paes stayed on course for a grand double at the US Open when he and Zimbabwe's Cara Black won the mixed doubles crown at the season-ending Grand Slam on Thursday.

The fifth seeded Indo-Zimbabwean pair beat the American-British pairing of Liezel Huber and Jamie Murray 7-6, 6-4 in the final.

The triumph increased Paes's tally of Grand Slam crowns to eight.

Games went with serve in the first set, which went to the tie-breaker, where Paes and Black fought back from 4-6 down to take the set at 8-6.

In the second set, Paes and Black got the crucial break in the fifth game, breaking Murray. They held serve comfortable thereafter to take the set and match.

Paes will also figure in the men's doubles final on Friday, when he and his Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy take on the Bryan twins Mike and Bob of the United States.

In 1999, Paes had partnered Mahesh Bhupathi and Lisa Raymond to win the men's doubles and mixed doubles crowns at Wimbledon.
